Tyne Anew at Northumbrian Quay, South Shields

Tyne Anew

Docked at Northumbrian Quay in South Shields, UK, I stepped out onto the ship’s bridge wing for a quick look around. Fresh air, clear skies, and that familiar quiet moment before embarkation begins. It was turnaround day on board, with one cruise ending and another set of guests soon arriving for the next voyage.

And standing just a few meters from the ship—right beside the berth—was Tyne Anew, the striking red steel sculpture beside the quay. Inspired by the River Tyne’s shipbuilding and engineering heritage, it stands as a modern reminder of the area’s proud industrial past.

I’ve been to this port countless times and passed this structure just as many times, but somehow I never really noticed how interesting it was until now. Seeing it from the bridge wing made me appreciate it differently. Tall, sharp, and impossible to miss, it stood right on the quay like a bold reminder of the area’s industrial roots. With the houses in the background and the blue sky above, it turned an ordinary port call into a scene worth remembering.

One thing many people don’t often see about life at sea is how the smallest moments can become the most memorable.

Not every memorable moment happens in city centers or famous attractions. Sometimes it happens while the ship is tied up, with no need to leave the gangway area at all. You step outside for a minute, glance around, and suddenly there’s something interesting right in front of you.

Standing there on the bridge wing, looking almost straight down at this landmark beside the berth, I was reminded how ports have their own identity. Some give you skylines. Some give you cranes. Some give you quiet water and working docks.

Some simply surprise you when you least expect it.

And some give you a giant red structure that makes you stop and stare.

Moments like that may seem small, but they stay with you. Maybe because they were unplanned. Maybe because they arrived in the middle of an ordinary workday.

No tour guide needed. No entrance fee. Just another unexpected view from the job.

That’s the beauty of seafaring life—sometimes the best sights are already waiting beside the ship.
