When Life Delivers News You’re Never Ready For
By Dex / March 26, 2026

Two days ago, my wife shared something that quietly shook me to my core.

The kind of news you never really prepare for—no matter how old you are, no matter how much life experience you think you have.

Her father… my father-in-law… has the dreaded “C.”

And according to the doctors, it has already spread.

Time, they said, may no longer be on his side.

I sat there, trying to process it all. Trying to understand how something like this could happen to someone who has lived a good, honest life. The kind of person who shows up for others, who loves deeply, who never wished harm on anyone.

And yet, here we are.

I found myself asking questions—not out of doubt or anger toward God—but out of a place of helplessness. Why do things like this happen? Why do good people have to endure so much pain?

I don’t have the answers.

Maybe none of us ever will.

What weighs even heavier on my heart is our children. They share a special bond with their grandpa—one filled with laughter, stories, and quiet moments that only grandparents and grandchildren understand.

For now, we’ve decided not to tell them yet.

They have exams coming up, and we don’t want to burden them with something this heavy at such a crucial time. It’s a difficult decision, one that doesn’t feel entirely right—but also feels necessary.

We’ll wait until they come home for their semestral break next week.

Until then, we carry this quietly.

Trying to stay strong. Trying to be present. Trying to make sense of something that simply doesn’t make sense.

Life has a way of reminding us—sometimes too harshly—how fragile everything is. How quickly things can change. How important it is to hold our loved ones a little closer, to say the words we often postpone, and to cherish even the simplest moments.

Right now, that’s all we can really do.

Just hold on to each other… and hope.
